Enduroman will be hosting the UK's first Deca Iron Triathlon in June 2009.  The event will be in the original format of a 24 mile swim, 1120 mile bike and a 262 mile run.

But this will not be a 'normal' Deca.  The Enduroman Arch 2 Arc hosts the most famous channel swim crossing in the world, so the Enduroman Deca will claim to be the world's first trans-nation Deca as the course runs through both England and Wales.  No riding and running around in small circles as per other Deca formats.  This is a true individual ultra triathlon challenge.

Swan Pool pictured left will provide the perfect location for the Deca's swim.  Based in the beautiful location of Sandwell Valley, the lake is already used for cold water qualification swims for athletes wishing to swim the English Channel

The base for the event will be in the village of Chorley, near Lichfield, Staffordshire. Enduroman will locate the athlete village at a local campsite. The start and finish areas for both the bike and run courses will be located within the site.  Athletes will provide their own tents / caravans / campervans.

Itinerary

Day 1 24 Mile open water lake swim.  Wetsuits Permitted

Days 2-6/7 5 days of cycling 224 miles per day OR
5 days of cycling 200 miles per day plus 1 day of cycling 120 miles per day.

Days 7/8 - 11/12 5 days of running 52 miles per day OR
6 days of running 43 miles per day

Athletes should prepared to complete either format if they enter he event.  The distances will be confirmed by the end of August 2008.

Any athlete that does not make the cut-off on ANY day will be disqualified, and will not under any circumstances be allowed to continue the race.

The swim will take place at Swan Pool, Sandwell Valley, West Midlands.  This will be an open water swim with athletes swimming around an 800m lap.  Athletes should have completed adequate open cold water training in the months before June 2009 before considering this challenge.  Athletes will be allowed to exit the water to replenish / warm up and then continue with their swim.

The cycle route will take the athletes from the Heart of England to the top of Wales on one out and back course that turns around in Snowdonia's National Park.
(subject to course confirmation)

The run route will take place on the Heart of England Way.  This historical footpath stretches 100 miles from the Cotswolds to Cannock Chase.

The path runs through the event village and will provide 2 laps of an out and back route.

Full details of the routes will be issued to athletes who have entered the event.

Athletes will be self-supported, both for nutrition and navigation.  Support vehicles will be allowed the drive the bike course with the cyclists (under Enduroman rules) and meet athletes at different locations on the run course.  Potential athletes should note, that it is a condition of entry that each athlete has at least one support crew plus a support vehicle for the entire event.

Athletes will start each day together.  The winner of the event will be the athlete with the fastest aggregate time.

(Subject to confirmation: athletes will commence each day at approx 05:00hrs.  The cut off will be between midnight and 02:00hrs the following morning - if you do not think that you can complete any of the days listed above by midnight after starting at 5am then do not enter this event).

During other Deca formats, athletes decide upon when to sleep.  During this event Enduroman will dictate the minimum hours athletes will sleep / rest between.  This is to ensure the safety of our cyclists on the open roads.

Athletes will get no more sleep than other formats, in fact as the cut off is 11-13 days, athletes may even get less!

Due to water temperate or adverse weather conditions, Enduroman reserve the right to alter routes, distances or disciplines of any day.

Athletes should note that there will either be an 11, 12 or 13 day cut off depending on the format.  This is considerably shorter than other Deca races.  As per the Arch to Arc, Enduroman want to organise an event that is challenging just to finish.

This will be a true point to point challenge that will hold the title of 'The Toughest Deca on the Planet'.

About the Heart of England Way

The Heart of England Way gives a green route, for 100 miles, the length of the
West Midlands region. Linking Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in Staffordshire, with the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in Gloucestershire, with much mileage in rural Warwickshire.

Starting at the Northern end, adjacent with the seat of the Earl of Lichfield, Shugborough Hall, at Milford near Stafford, the first sections of the WAY take the walker across some of England’s most precious heath lands, within Cannock Chase, past the Iron Age fort of Castle Ring, and onward, a gentle roll down to
Lichfield where “The Mother of The Midlands” (Lichfield’s three spire Cathedral) stands proud. Steeped in history, from Charles II and Dr Johnson, as well as Roman roads (Ryknield Street is crossed first), onward towards the hilly and impressive section near Hints and the Roman road of Watling Street. On towards Drayton Manor Park (the former home of Sir Robert Peel) and the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal, to Kingsbury Water Park, before running to the east of Birmingham, and then to Meriden (the centre of England). The pretty English villages of Berkswell, and the moated Baddesley Clinton Hall (NT property) are next, before crossing the Grand Union and Stratford Canals. On to our second “Beaudesert” and the Motte & Bailey castle at Henley in Arden. On to Alcester, there is gentle walking through low-lying country with woodlands, canals and agricultural land, and the well-wooded landscapes of the Forest of Arden, the Avon Valley, the Vale of Evesham, to Meon Hill and Chipping Campden. After this honey-pot of a Cotswold treasure, you walk along through long shouldered hills and deep wooded valleys, through Batesford Arboretum, Swell and Lower Slaughter. This is The Cotswolds where Heart of England Way finally ends in Bourton on the Water. An exquisite place and a grand final point.
