EVENT DESCRIPTION

SWIM STAGE

The swimming stage will take place in the Atlantic Ocean at Playa Blanca, Yaiza, Lanzarote. Playa Blanca is situated in the south of Lanzarote and has the benefit of being sheltered from the prevailing N.E winds; this however does not guarantee a flat swim. The swim course will be laps and the swimmer will leave the water at the end of every lap. The swimmer will pass through the lap control after every lap and must tell the official their race number. It is the swimmers responsibility to ensure that the official has taken the correct race number. In the event of the timing chip system failing, the counting of laps will be done here. The athlete will be able to ask how many laps they have completed at this point and have the opportunity to take on fluids before re-entering the sea. The distance from the swim venue to the transition area is 150m. Each swimmer is to wear the coloured swim cap issued to them by the organisers.  Wetsuits are encouraged but not compulsory. Wave starts may be introduced depending on numbers and sea conditions.

Swimmers Safety

Should Enduroman feel that the sea state for the Double Iron event to be too dangerous to start the swim on Friday 4th February at the chosen time, Enduroman will organised a second Double Iron start time for Saturday 5th February.

If however on the Saturday 5th February the sea state is still too dangerous for swimming the Enduroman Double Iron Triathlon will be replaced by a Duathlon keeping to the distances stated for the bike and run.

Should the sea state be such that it is becomes dangerous to swimmers once the race has started, Enduroman Ltd reserve the right to shorten the swim swim and start the bike. Participant's safety is paramount but Enduroman will only shorten or cancel the swim if absolutely necessary.

CYCLE STAGE

The cycle stage will be 6 laps of 60Km

The course is out and back from race centre in Playa Blanca with two complete loops around El Golfo. One lap clockwise the other anti clockwise. The route takes in some of Yaiza’s spectacular coastline and volcanoes. The main aid station is situated at the race centre where all your needs are catered for, there will also be a water station at Salinas roundabout for the cyclist to top up a bottle if need be. The same area is also the lap counting/control area in the event of the timing chip system failing. The cyclist must shout to the official their race number. It is the cyclist’s responsibility to ensure that the official has taken the correct race number.

The cycle course starts at the race centre joins the old road direction from Playa Blanca to Yaiza (by the petrol station) Follow the old road until the first roundabout by Salinas, 3rd exit (left turn) towards El Golfo (do not go down to El Golfo) following the road to the big roundabout just below Yaiza, Take the 2nd exit (old road) back to Salinas roundabout. (Clockwise loop complete). At the Salinas roundabout take 4th exit (old road) and retrace the route in reverse back to Salinas roundabout (anti-clockwise loop complete) take 1st exit to direction Playa Blanca, on reaching race centre. Lap complete.

In hours of reduced visibility, cyclists MUST wear fluorescent bib / vest also have adequate bike lighting.

The run stage will be 31 loops of a 2.73 kilometre course, with the main aid station located at the race centre. There will also be a water station at the lap counting/control area. The runner must shout to the official their race number. It is the runner’s responsibility to ensure that the official has taken the correct race number. In the event of the timing chip system failing, the counting of laps will be done here.  The athlete will be able to ask how many laps they have completed at this point run.

The run course will be sign posted and starts at the race centre, runs straight to the end of the road where athletes will turn left, at the mini roundabout turn left.  TRANSITION AREA

The transition area will be located in the race centre 150m from the swim start/finish. The transition area will have portable loos, change areas for male and female competitors, an event bag storage area and athlete support area. The athlete support area is open only once the event has started.

All Athletes must rack bikes on Thursday between the hours stated. Friday during the rechecking period athletes can place cycle race gear on and beside their bikes.

All athletes race kit and spares will need to be placed in their event bags. The event bags must be handed in to the marquee after the rechecking of racked bikes. All athlete event bags must be handed in during the stated time prior to the beach opening and race start. The athlete and athlete support will have access to event kit bags once the race has started. Support crew only on production of official marked wrist band.

When an athlete or athlete support crew need to gain access to the event kit bags during the event, the athlete or the support crew can get the event kit bag from the Enduroman Official at the Marquee. Once the event bag is taken from the marquee it is out of Enduroman control. Athletes and support can return the bag to the marquee at any time as long as it still clearly displays the official tag.

All athlete support must be done in the athlete support area.

The Athletes used wetsuits must be placed in a waterproof bag and stored in the athlete event kit bag or handed to a family member or a support crew before entering the race centre. Athlete support crew members will only allowed into the athlete support area. The bike racking area is not open to anyone other than athletes during the event. Spare clothing, nutrition, batteries etc should be kept in the athlete’s event bag or with the support crew.  Athletes will use their own personal bags as their event bags. The bag will be strong and in a good condition and closed before being handed into the Marquee between the stated times prior to the beach opening. The bag will be tagged with the athlete’s race number by an Enduroman official watched by the athlete.

MECHANICAL ASSISTANCE

A fully trained bike mechanic will be on-site to look after all your mechanical needs during the race.  This will be a basic service, just to get you back on the road again.  The service will only be available in the race centre.  If a cyclist has a mechanical problem out on the race course, they must decide if to return to the race centre under their own steam or use a sweep vehicle. If the cyclist uses the sweep vehicle they must start the lap again from race centre. If the cyclist returns to race centre under their own steam before passing the lap control point, they must start the lap again from race centre after their bike is repaired. At no time can support crews help with mechanical problems or give a lift.

The mechanic will have minimal spare parts.  Any part taken from the mechanic must be paid for in full either by the cyclist or their support team before they continue with the race.

MEDICAL COVER

Cruz Roja will be the main medical cover for the event.
Their staff, vehicles and equipment mean they can provide advanced life support and primary care in all environments.

SUPPORT & SUPPORT CREWS

Although it is highly recommended that every athlete brings at least one support crew member, it is not a condition of entry.  Consideration should be given to bring 2 support crew members to allow one member to sleep while the other supports. No more than 2 support crew members per athlete allowed in race centre.

The Enduroman team and volunteers will do all they can to help unsupported athletes but are under no obligation to do so. Enduroman cannot supply a support crew to unsupported athletes. Athletes without a support crew member are required to inform Enduroman absolutely no later than the Wednesday evening February 2nd 2011.

The Race Centre (at the beginning/end of every bike & run lap), will contain portable loos and a feed station.  A support crew area located within the race centre is allocated to the athlete's and their support, a place with seating to relax and replenish. The athletes will pass the support crew area on both the bike and run courses at the same point.

Athletes and support may require sleep at some point during the event. Support crew are advised to return to their booked accommodation to sleep. A marquee with camp beds controlled by an Enduroman official is provided for sleeping purposes. At the sleeping marquee the athlete will be able to sleep in relative comfort.

The sleeping marquee is not on the race course. There is only one place that the athlete is allowed to leave/enter the race course and must do so only after informing an official.

In the interest of safety, an athlete whilst competing will either be on the race course or in the sleeping marquee having informed an official.  An athlete leaving these two areas will be observed as a withdrawal from the race.

Support crew vehicles will not be allowed to drive on the bike course during the event. Vehicles will not be permitted into the race centre or sleeping marquee area.  Please note the entrance to race centre is also the bike route.

The above is for the safety of the athletes. A parking area is allocated very near to race centre.

Pacing from support crews will not be tolerated.  Crews must not join the athletes at any stage during the bike stage.  Discretion will be used during the run stage and a support crew member may be allowed to walk/run a lap with their athlete if Enduroman feel there is good reason, but first you need to request permission with the reason why.

Please remember:  We want every athlete to finish the Enduroman Double Iron Lanzarote and will do all we can to ensure that happens. If you as the chosen athlete support crew and feel there is anything we can do to help you help your athlete to finish please let us know.
