Can athletes swap bikes during the bike stage?

Athletes must use one bike throughout the bike stage.  This must be the same bike that was checked for road safety by the officials when racking.

Can athletes change wheels during the bike stage?

The support crew area will be located at the end of every bike lap.  You support crew will be able to pass you any equipment that you need including spare wheels.  You can also exit the bike course and walk into the support crew area to access your kit.

Can athletes wear MP3's  IPODS on the run stage?

Unfortunately, the wearing of IPODs / MP3's etc will not be allowed due to health and safety requirements on the risk assessment. (Updated 09/12/07).

What sort of lights are required on the bike?

This was the biggest mistake athletes made in the 2007 race.  Do not chose your lights 'to be seen' instead of 'to see'.  The roads are dark and there is traffic on the roads.  It is recommended that all cyclists use lights to a minimum standard of brightness and reliability as this Cateye light.

However, this will only ensure that you are clearly lit up for other road users to see.  Please consider multiple lights in addition to these.

There are 3 swim waves.  How is it going to work?

There will be 3 waves of 24 athletes (4 per lane). Wave 2 will start 5 hours after the 1st wave, wave 3 will start 3.5 hours after the 2nd wave.

How are the waves going to be seeded?

Athletes will be contacted and asked to provide their potential 1x Iron distance time, along with their individual swim times.

The predicted faster overall athletes are seeded in the later waves to ensure that waves finish closer together.  Lanes will then be allocated according to single IM swim split times.

How will we know which athlete is in which wave during the race?

There will be 24 athletes in each wave.  Wave 1 will contain athlete numbers 1-24 and wave 2 will contain athlete numbers 25-50.  Wave 3 will contain 51 - 72.

Will athletes be allowed to wear wetsuits?

Athletes will be permitted to wear wetsuits, however not encouraged.  Competitors are to be aware of the risks of dehydration and provide themselves with adequate water etc during the swim stage.
