- Arch 2 Arc - Heartache for Nicky....
Nicky Farrugia came agonisingly
close to becoming Enduroman No 6 last week, however due to the
cold waters of the English Channel and exhaustion from the 84
mile run, Nicky's dream came to end only 1 mile from the French
coast.
A brave attempt from a fantastic athlete from Malta.
Race report
from Eddie Ette:
"I was very excited to meet Nicky, a triathlete and open
water swimmer of immense history and achievements. While waiting
for the weather to allow an attempt at the A2A, I had a great
time talking with him about past events and athletes we had
both met.
Severe stomach cramps and retching forced us to stop the swim
for the athlete’s safety one mile from the French coast.
Nicky expressed his disappointment and wanted to continue but
we could not allow it. Taken from the water, cold and miserable,
the character and strength of Nicky came quickly to the surface
when he said he would still wish to do the bike from Calais
to Paris to hopefully still raise the funds promised to the
charity.
Nicky started the bike and quickly showed a strong consistent
pace that would cover the mileage within 14 hours. Then after
110km, bad luck struck again – Bike broken, body damaged
– The event was finished.
Personally I hope Nicky will return again to attempt the challenge.
I know from what I have seen during the four days of the event
and five days waiting to start, the man is more than capable
of being successful.
A successful A2A challenge requires the athlete to have a massive
endurance base, extremely strong mental attitude, tolerance
to pain and good luck".

- Double Iron - Hywel Davies - Winner 2008
"In
2000 I won Ultrafit, Tough Guy, X Zone, Indoor Rowing and an
Adventure race and thought that was the pinnacle. In 2006 I
won 3 Half Ironmans, won age group at IMUK and went to Hawaii.
I thought that was it.
But the point is...everything
I went through on Sunday eclipsed the lot. I have never
felt so happy with myself and never felt such a sense of achievement
which that race brought to me. The people that mattered
to me were there and most importantly, I know what I went through".
